Argentina Requires Companies To Shape Up
Argentina has taken the first steps to make businesses accountable for the damage they cause to the environment. This law was implemented last month and it is estimated that it will affect about 35,000 companies in the country.
The law states that any company that engages in potentially hazardous and damaging activities will have to buy insurance to cover any environmental damage they may cause in an accident etc.
This law is an extremely important piece of legislation, as it means that if an accident does happen, hopefully the damage to the environment in the long term will be nil. It also means that if companies don’t want to be hit with extreme insurance premiums, they will try their utmost to implement procedures and policies to decrease the likely of causing an environmentally unfriendly accident.
I take my hat off to the Argentinian officials and I do hope that the rest of the governments follow suit with similar pieces of legislation.
