Is It Worth It To Go Green?
A common perception of going green is that it is expensive… when shopping for cars, you’ll notice that hybrids cost more. If you looked into installing solar panels, you’ll realize it costs more. But you don’t have to be limited to those ways of going green. There’s a bunch of ways to go green for cheap or actually saving money in the process.
A great way to be green and not spend as much money is to reuse items. Boxes can be used for storage… jars can be used for storage also. Old papers and envelopes can be used as scratch paper, instead of having to spend money on post-it notes. It can also be shredded and used as compost. Also, if you are reusing items, not only are you not creating more waste, but you’re consuming less also, saving you money.
You should be thinking long term. Some items, like cloth diapers, cloth napkins, and cloth towels may be expensive at first, but they will last way longer and create much less waste. They will definitely save you money in the long run. Consider integrating these items slowly into your household.
Organic food is more expensive, and there’s no way getting around that. But, you can grow your own food in a garden, to help to offset the cost (and it tastes better too when it’s fresh picked!)
As with the cloth items I talked about above, you also may see energy saving lightbulbs and notice that they are more expensive also. But,they last way longer, and use less energy, saving you money in the long run and in your monthly power bill. You power company may also offer rebates or discounts on energy saving lightbulbs.
Going green may require a little bit of an investment, but most things will last way longer than their waste-creating counter-parts, and some things may even save you money. If it does cost more, just consider it an investment in your future, in you children’s future, and your grandchildren’s future.
It definitely is worth it to go green!
